Meet our speakers

Dr Michael Gibbert

Program Co-Director and Adjunct Professor

Michael Gibbert (Ph.D. St. Gallen University, M.Com. Stellenbosch, South Africa) is full professor of sustainable consumption at Università della Svizzera italiana (USI) in Lugano, and Adjunct Professor at EHL. He previously served on the faculty of Bocconi, was a research associate at INSEAD, and completed part of his Ph.D. at Yale School of Management.

At EHL, he is co-director of the Drucker-EHL DBA, a program that is unique in the DBA market in that it focuses on human-centered management in the context of mid-career transitions. He is also academic director of EHL’s Sustainability Lab, which was founded to explore how using less resources can lead to surprising new customer experiences (after all, popular parlance suggests that sometimes ‘less is more’).

Before making his own career transition into academia, Michael was a professional chef (at least that’s how he likes to think of himself - having completed an apprenticeship at Schwarzer Bock Wiesbaden back in the mists of time). His other great passions are ‘La Bionda Piemontese’ (a type of chicken) and ‘La Bergamasca’ (a handsome sheep breed with floppy ears), both of which can sometimes be seen in the background during his Teams meetings.

Dr David Sprott

Program Co-Director and Professor of Marketing, Drucker School of Management

David Sprott is the Henry Y. Hwang Dean and a professor of marketing in the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management and is on faculty at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland. His research interests include retailing, branding, influence strategies, and marketing public policy.

He received his PhD in Marketing from the University of South Carolina and earned a BA in Business and an MBA from Kent State University. Prior to his arrival at the Drucker School, Sprott served as professor of marketing and dean of the College of Business at the University of Wyoming. At UW he led a renewed strategic vision embracing the student experience, quality academic research, and economic engagement of the state. Previously Sprott served on the faculty at Washington State University for more than two decades and held the Boeing/Scott and Linda Carson Chair of Marketing, among other leadership positions; he was a recipient of an Outstanding Faculty Research Award from the WSU College of Business.

Sprott’s research has been published in leading scholarly journals including Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Marketing Research, and Journal of Retailing. His teaching interests include retail management, leadership, brand management, consumer behavior, sales management, and research methods at the undergraduate, master, and doctoral levels.

Sprott is the author and co-author of numerous publications, including serving as co-editor of Handbook of Research on Customer Engagement, (Edward Elgar, 2019).

He is a member of several marketing and consumer organizations, including the American Marketing Association, Association for Consumer Research, and Society for Consumer Psychology.

Alexander Staartjes

DBA Student

Alexander is a Paris-based executive, entrepreneur, investor, and consultant specializing in fine wines, spirits, and luxury hospitality. Through his private office, he places strategic investments and advises businesses across these categories, while serving as a board member of several companies in the wines and spirits industry. He is currently a doctoral candidate at EHL and CGU, pursuing a DBA with a thesis on the reputation of fine Burgundy wines.

Previously, Alexander served as COO of Crurated, the pioneering platform connecting fine wine producers directly with collectors through blockchain-verified provenance. Before that, he spent eight years at Pernod Ricard, where he led the luxury strategy for the group’s champagne and cognac brands across London and Paris, building innovative global direct-to-consumer models. His earlier career included sales, marketing and business development roles at Six Senses Resorts & Spas. Alexander holds an MBA from ESSEC and a BSc from EHL.
